17th to early 20th cent., various techniques (incl. photogr. of paintings) and sizes (incl. some very large portraits), all under passepartout.

Comprises a.o.: (1) "René Descartes. Chevr. Seigneur du Perron." Oval col. mezzotint portrait, 15 x 13 cm., above engr. text., published in Paris by Blin, ca. 1790; (2) "Descartes composant son Système du Monde". Col. mezzotint dep. Descartes sitting at a table, 13 x 14.5 cm., above engr. text, published by the same as (1), ca. 1790; (3) Renatus Des-Cartes, Dominus de Perron (...)." Engr. portrait by Franciscus van Schooten, 1644, 12 x 10 cm, above engr. laudatory poem by Constantijn Huygens. And 10 later portraits of the same. Added: 11 others, incl. a large portrait of Voltaire in his library and large portraits of François Halma and Pierre Gassendi (total 27).
