*Famous Jewish theatre, founded in 1918. Its first decors and costumes were designed by Marc Chagall. During its European/world tour in 1928-29 artistic director Alexander Granowski decided not to return to Russia. New artistic director and actor Solomon Michoels was killed in a staged car accident in 1948, ordered by Joseph Stalin. The next year new director Benjamin Suskin was captured and the theatre seized to exist. In 1952 during the antisemitic Night of the murdered poets Suskin was executed.
