*Maria (1898-1977) was the daughter of Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin. She started working with Circus Busch in 1929, where she performed with her father's impersonators and was thus continually confronted with his life and death. Later she became a lion tamer in the United States at the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus, but ended this career after she was attacked by a bear. She stayed in the U.S. until her death, leading a relatively quiet and normal life.
