"Hubert Goltzius is wellicht de opschrijver en misschien zelfs de opsteller en uitgever van de preken." (NCC). Popular and vehement anti-catholic work which lived through many editions. The 'historie' and the 'sermons' were written by a contemporary of the real Franciscan friar Corn. Adriaensz. Brauwer (1521-81) of Bruges (Belgium) and based on historical facts. The author describes several secret meetings where 'Brother' Cornelis flagellates women, preferably young and good-looking, in order to make them more disciplinable ("secrete penitentie"). These passages have a clear erotic undertone. The author has a very violent pen, especially when the Dutch reformists are concerned.
