[Travel accounts] Jacob Jansz. de Roy. Hachelijke reys-togt (...) na Borneo en Atchin

Zijnde een opregt verhaal van zeldsaame ontmoetingen, en deerlijke rampen; als beroovinge van vaartuygen en goederen, honger, dorst, naaktheyd, armoede, veelderley doods-gevaar en andere onuytspreekelijke ongemakken (...). Mitsgaders een seer naauwkeurige beschrijving van het eyland Borneo (...). Insgelijks een aanmerkelijk berigt van het koningrijk Atchin op Sumatra (...). Some browning/foxing, and offsetting from a manuscript index tipped-onto first blank, vellum sl. dust-soiled. A very good copy of the second 8vo edition, issued in the same year as the first. The first 8vo edition is dated 1706, and has a sl. different ending of the title-p.: "nu aldereerst na een egt af-schrift in't ligt gegeeven" (without the indication "den alderlaatsten druk"). It also has a privilege behind the introd., "Druckfouten aldus te verbeeteren" at the end (in our edition these are corrected in the text), and sl. other differences compared to our edition. The pagination and plates are the same. Both editions are rare. Landwehr, V.O.C. 291; Tiele 944. Very interesting travel account, probably published for the first time around 1698. As indicated on the title-p. the author suffered incredible hardship during his voyage, this was the result of a mutiny on his ship by his largely Chinese and Javanese crew. He was outlawed by the V.O.C., but successfully continued his journey. His account contains the first extensive description of Borneo.
