Dick Higgins, Wipe Out for Orchestra/ Softly for Orchestra (Graphis No.144 and 143)

New York, Something Else Press, 1967. Two offset lithos, 60.8 x 50 cm. One printed on white cardstock, the other on clear acetate, to be layered on top of each other. From an edition of 100 signed and numbered copies, this is number 24. Hand signed in blue pen on rear of paper litho, which also includes printed editor's information. The layered work, published by Higgins' own press, was meant as a musical score. Dick Higgins (1938 – 1998) was an American artist, composer, art theorist, poet, publisher, printmaker, and a co-founder of the Fluxus movement. Some browning on rear of paper print, else in fine condition.

Editor's text: when the acetate is placed in any position over this diagram and when the resulting notation is performed by an orchestra large enough to play most though not necessarily all the part and when everything from solos to tuttis is played as loud as the instrument is capable and when the notation is interpreted in any consistent way, you will hear Dick Higgins' Graphis #144: Wipeout. but when the acetate is placed over anything else perhaps a newspaper or a poster, a drawing or a photograph and the parts are played consistently as above in a manner appropriate to the title, you will hear Dick Higgins' Graphis #143: Softly for Orchestra.
