Earth Air Fire Water: Elements of Art. Boston MA, Museum of Fine Arts, 1971
Colour printed mylar cover, spiral bound, 28 x 21 cm, 65 pp. Volume One of the exhibition catalogue in two volumes (though not mentioned as such in the publication), comprising text only. The second volume has illustrations only (not in this lot). Striking lay-out and typography, with one page for each artist featuring a biography and vivid descriptions of the exhibited works. Essay by David Antin, bibliography in rear. Artists include Dennis Oppenheim, Robert Smithson, Michael Heizer, Douglas Huebler, Donald Burgy, Dan Graham, Hans Haacke, Allen Kaprow, Richard Serra, Alan Sonfist and many others. Plastic cover with small chipped off corner, ca. 1 x 3 cm. Else a very fine copy. Rare.
The lack of illustrations is compensated by descriptive texts such as: 'ten helium-filled clouds float in the air currents' (Andy Warhol, Clouds, 1966); 'This work, placed in a window of the Museum restaurant, reacts to the contrast of heat on one side and cold on the other' (Alan Sonfist, Untitled 1971); 'Drops of water fall in a slow random sequence making ripple patterns in a shallow saucerlike container' (Laura Grissi, Drops of Water, 1969); 'Markers thrown into tide off Salisbury Beach, New Hamsphire, and carried out to sea, photographed every minute' (Douglas Huebler, Water, November 1968).
