Richard Long (born 1945) is a celebrated proponent of Land Art. For over 50 years he goes on lengthy walks in remote places, collecting natural material such as stones, branches, water or ash to 'draw' lines, spirals, circles or crosses in the landscape. In 1996 he won the prestigious Wilhelm Lehmbruck Prize of the City of Duisburg, Germany. For the exhibition accompanying the prize he created the 'River Avon Mud Circle' out of dried mud, still on display at the Lehmbruck Museum. The drawing references the circle and river.
