*Mademoiselle Lucie was Émilie-Louise Delabigne, or countess Valtesse de La Bigne (Paris, 1848-1910), a French courtisane and demimondaine. She went from being a poor street prostitute to becoming one of the most elite and well-known courtesans in Paris and a muse of artists such as Édouard Manet and writers such as Octave Mirbeau.
