*The Emin Pasha Relief Expedition (1887-1889) was among the last major European explorations into the African interior in the 19th century. Led by Henry Morton Stanley, its main goal was to aid Emin Pasha, the Egyptian governor of Equatoria - now a region of modern-day South Sudan - who was under siege by Mahdist forces.
