*Tintypes were a popular form of photography in the mid-19th century, commonly used for portraits. Their success stemmed from the relative ease and low cost of the process compared to daguerreotypes. A photographer could prepare, expose, develop, and varnish a tintype plate, presenting it to the customer within minutes.
