Nicolas, Joep (1897-1972). Ovid's Metamorphosis. Four Stained Glass Windows

for the transom window of 's-Gravendijkwal 61, Rotterdam. Mid 20th cent. All 83 x 48 cm. 3 windows depict scenes with Phaeton, one portrays Artemis. Incl. the orig. blueprint pencil drawings of the house featuring these windows.

1 window tile professionally repaired, overall in good condition. Nicolas is well-known for his biblical/ religiously themed stained glass windows for churches and public buildings. These privately commissioned designs based on Ovid's Metamorphoses are an interesting exception to his typical oeuvre. The construction with the transom window has since been reconstructed after it changed ownership in the 1960s, but the work by Nicolas was saved and has been carefully archived by the family of the first owner.
