Portantius, J. History print of the Spanish march to Duiveland and Schouwen
Antwerp (?), ca. 1576. Etching, 24 x 33 cm. Highly detailed bird's eye view of the Spanish advance towards Zierikzee, also depicting the siege of Bommenede and a naval battle.
Sl. creased. The only known copy of this print. Johannes Portantius was a geographer and mathematician from Ghent. He resided in Antwerp and was part of the circle of A. Ortelius. This print was likely part of a series about the siege of Zierikzee. Portantius also made a series about the Sack of Antwerp. Rare. These series appear to be similar to the Geschichtsblättern of F. Hogenberg.
