Partly (vaguely) waterst., binding a bit worn/ rubbed, leather over joints splitting. A good copy w. interesting provenance, w. former owner's entry in pen on first free endpaper: 'A. Perk 1838. Hilversum'. Albertus Perk (1795-1880), notary, alderman, secretary of Stad en Lande van Gooiland and as such important for the "erfgooiers", also the namesake of the Hilversumse Historische Kring Albertus Perk. Below his owner's entry, Perk wrote: 'Uit de bibliotheek van den graaf K. van Hogendorp' (most likely Gijsbert Karel van Hogendorp, 1762-1834). Also w. owner's entry 'Elizabeth Furly' in pen on first blank, perhaps somehow connected to the Bibliotheca Furliana of Benjamin Furly, auctioned in 1714. Very rare third Dutch edition. The first Latin edition was published by Plantin in Antwerp in 1575, the first Dutch edition was published by Plantin in Leiden, 1585; a second edition appeared in 1610. Coornert's text is a translation of 25 allegorical Latin poems by Furmerius on the use and abuse of wealth and richness and are an ode to Horace. It also contains a humorous, didactic poem on the beneficial influence of imprisonment, obviously composed by Coornhert during his own incarceration in the Hague in 1567. Landwehr, Emblem and Fablebooks, 179; De Vries 18; Visser/ Hoftijzer, Emblem books in Leiden, item 171; Praz, p. 307-308.
