*The Sochi Project emerged from a partnership between photographer Hornstra and writer/filmmaker Van Bruggen. It is recognized as Europe's first crowdfunding endeavor for art and photojournalism. The project aimed to educate a wide audience about the turbulent area hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics by employing 'slow journalism', which involves thorough research and deep involvement in the region prior to publishing their work.
