Lacking 6 plates and the introductions in French and German. Foxed throughout, occas. stains and folds, binding worn along extremities. Sold w.a.f. Very rare work on the designs for Charles of Hesse's garden by the Roman architect Guernieri; the gardens were situated on the slopes of the mountain behind Charles' hunting lodge at Weissenstein. The detailed plates show the architect's striking solutions for the mountainous terrain. Mark Millard Coll. vol. III, comp. no. 40 (third edition, 1727): 'Few gardens in Europe were as fantastic and grandiose as Wilhelmshöhe, one of the finest examples of baroque landscape gardening with its caves and grottos and its enormous hillside cascade terminating in an octagon temple (...)'.
