In 'The Play of Death', James Lee Byars appeared flanked by twelve doctors dressed in black tuxedos, all of them standing in a row on thirteen adjacent balconies of the Dom Hotel in Cologne. The artist whispered the 'th' sound (Greek for thanatos, death) and then disappeared.
