[Astronomy] Huygens, Christiaan. The celestial worlds discover'd:
Or, conjectures concerning the inhabitants, plants and productions of the worlds in the planets. Written in Latin by Christianus Huygens, and inscrib'd to his brother Constantine Huygens, late secretary to his Majesty King William. The second edition, corrected and enlarged. London, printed for James Knapton, 1722, VI,162 p., w. 5 fold. engr. plates, cont. blindst. calf, sm. 8vo. W. former owner's entry on title-p., minimal other internal imperfections. Neatly rebacked in old style.
The second English edition. The first English edition was published in 1698, the same year of publication as the first Latin edition. Important early contemplation on extraterrestrial life, the existence of solar systems beyond our own, and the dark and light patches on the moon, Mars and Jupiter, perhaps indicating the presence of water.
