The original English edition (The habit of the horse; a treatise of female equitation) appeared in 1857, in our edition the introduction is present in both English and French. Mrs. J. Stirling-Clarke wrote the book because "although many books have been published which succesfully impart a knowledge of riding to gentlemen, not one has appeared that can be regarded as a sufficiently comprehensive treatise for ladies, who are desirous of perfecting themselves in an accomplishment so requiring, in their case, advise and instruction (...)."
