[Black interest. American Judaica] Puck. 40 loose issues
Nos. 465-482 & 508-529 (Vol XVIII-XXI). New York, Keppler & Schwarzmann, 1886-87. All w. centerfolds (col. chromolithgraphs) and num. other illustrations (in colour) by, a.o., J. Keppler, C.J. Taylor, E.N. Blue. Covers themes such as racism, anti-Semitism, Irish home rule (and migration) and anti-socialism (often in response to the Haymarket Affair). Includes the notable centerfold: "NO PASSAGE FOR A DEMOCRATIC NEGRO!", depicting James Campbell Matthews, the first African American to graduate from New York Law School, being blocked by the Republican-controlled Senate. One senator is shown holding a banner saying "No salvation for the negro outside of the G.O.P." This image was published in response to the Senate's refusal to confirm Matthews as Recorder of Deeds for the District of Columbia, a position previously held by Frederick Douglass.
Regular signs of age and wear, overall in good condition. A fine collection of the first commercially successful American humour magazine. (total 40)
