Marcel Duchamp with cigar. Photograph by Niki (Nicolas) Ekstrom, 1965
Original silver gelatin print, 34.5 x 23 cm. In passe-partout, 42 x 29.5 cm. Photographer's stamp 'Copyright 1965 by Niki Ekstrom' and New York address stamp on verso. With several notations on verso, handwritten in ink and pencil, mentioning sizes, and archival number, 'Duchamp' and 'Retour K. Schippers'. The photo features a mark in red ink, probably indicating the cropping size for a publication. This seems to correspond to the notations on rear. Pinholes in corners, else a beautiful vintage print.
The same print is held in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Provenance collection K. Schippers. Nicolas Ekstrom (1939-2009) pursued a varied career in archaeology, photography, art and landscape design. He had a direct connection with avantgarde artists from the 1960s and 1970s through his father, director of Cordier & Ekstrom Gallery in New York who worked with Duchamp, Man Ray and Noguchi, a.o.
