Zeegen, Adrianus van (1881-1961). Show Pigeons, two drawings

(1) Show Pigeon. Circa 1920, pencil and chalk. Ca. 21 x 14 cm (image), 29 x 22 cm (sheet). (2) Idem. Pencil. Ca. 21 x 16 cm (image), 28 x 22 cm (sheet). Both monogrammed + 'Studio' in pencil in the image lower right and signed in pencil lower margin. In good condition.

Adrianus van Zeegen jr. was an early proponent of Dutch abstract art particularly with his drawings of animals and underwater scenes. This lesser-known master studied under Jan Sluijter and had a close artistic relationship with Jan Toorop. There is no record of the fact that he had a staffed studio, but the reference may pertain to his sister Christine, with whom he collaborated extensively though he did not always acknowledge her artistic contributions. (total 2)
