Joint splitting in top compartment, corners of covers rounded/ bumped, letterpiece lacking. W. bookplate of A. (Anne?) Maclaine Pont on first free endpaper. Anne Maclaine Pont (1916-1969) was an active member of the Dutch resistance during WW2. She died at the age of 52 in a car-crash.

Written during De Groot's imprisonment in the castle Loevestein (1619-1621), the first edition incorporating the work of Hogerbeets. In this Haarlem edition, the 6 tables that accompanied the editions published in The Hague and Amsterdam in 1631, were deleted because of their incomprehensibility to the reader. Instead the information is provided at the beginning of the book. Ter Meulen/ Diermanse, Bibl. de Grotius, item 760: in a letter dated July 12, 1630, de Groot requested that his brother would remove leaf 72 from the text because of an inconsistency and replace it with a new leaf; Rogge, Bibl. De Groot's classic introduction to Dutch Law, originally planned to consist of 4 'Boecken'. The part on procedural law and public law ('lands-stand-recht') never materialized. In the years following the release from Loevestein, Hugo de Groot's brother Willem pressed him to seek a publisher, to which Hugo agreed February 1628, but the book wasn't published until March 1631.
