In 1964 the World's Fair in New York commissioned Andy Warhol (1928-1987) to make a work for the facade of the New York State Pavilion. He created 'Thirteen Most Wanted Men', a mural composed of 22 head-and-shoulder mug shots taken from a booklet created by the New York City Police Department with images of the most wanted criminals of 1962. It caused a scandal and the images were painted over in monochrome silver before the World’s Fair opened. Warhol re-created the mural on a smaller scale in 20 separate paintings, which were eventually exhibited at Ileana Sonnabend Gallery.
