Franciszka Themerson (1907 – 1988) was a Polish painter, illustrator, experimental filmmaker and stage designer. She moved to Paris in 1938 and lived in London from 1942 until her death. From 1948 to 1979 she was the art director and co-founder of the avant-garde publishing house Gaberbocchus Press, together with her husband, the writer Stefan Themerson. Her drawings and paintings, along with numerous collaborative pieces produced with Stefan Themerson, are featured in public collections across Europe. A retrospective show 'Franciszka Themerson: Walking Backwards’ was held at Tate Britain recently, from June 2024 until March 2025.
