[Japan] Utaemon, Nakamura XV. Shibaraku scroll with haiga of fox handpuppet, in or. box
Ca. 1950. Haiga (painting with haiku) on silk, w. Utaemon seal, lacquered scroll. 203 x 38 cm. In wooden case w. printed leaflet. Minor unobtrusive browning, overall in very good condition.
The Utaemon lineage forms a renowned dynasty of Kabuki actors, with roots extending back to the 18th cent. They were often engaged in visual arts alongside their theatrical performances. This scroll was made as a souvenir for Utaemon's visit to the Inari Shrine, where members of rival acting family, the Danjuros, had been buried.
