Rubens, Peter Paul (1577-1640) (Circle of). Artemisia having the cup of wine filled
with the ashes of Mausolus. Drawing in black chalk, 48 x 41 cm (uneven edges), on laid paper w. watermark coat of arms of the University of Paris (three French lilies and a hand with a book), surmounted by a quadrifoil and a banderole with 'S.NIVELLE' (Siméon Nivelle). Mounted under passe-partout. Lower right corner restored, (previously missing), several folds, middle-fold reinforced w. tape, a number of sm. marg. tears closed w. tape.
Almost certainly a contemporary copy (w. the slight possibility that is in fact a preliminary study) after a ca. 1615 painting from the Rubens studio, now at the Bildergalerie am Schloss Sanssouci in Potsdam. The watermark corresponds to Briquet 1837 and resembles that found in a 1573 drawing by Maarten van Heemskerck (dep. St. Peter being freed from prison by an Angel, coll. Boymans-Van Beuningen).
