Nat, Willem van der (1864-1929) (under pseud. Soranus). (Market salesman at work)
Drawing in pen and ink, mounted. Finished in watercolour. Signed "Soranus" in the lower right corner. 18 x 12 cm.
Nice and rare original example of Van der Nat's work as an illustrator. Above the signature the word "Haarlemer olie" is written. On the table in front of the salesman are a pair of pliers and a sm. dish displaying freshly extracted molars, as well as a box marked "kiespijn" (toothache) on it, all suggesting that our salesman is a charlatan. Nevertheless, he has attracted a sizeable audience with a flute in his mouth and a handheld gong.
