C.V. Banketbakkerij E.J. Carlier, Rotterdam. Customer card archive of approx. 300 cards
Stamped, late 1940 to early 1950s. Originating from the worldwide "Carlier's Air-Service", the archive also includes an original promotional photograph, several flyers, price-lists, a few orig. letters and two orig. cardboard boxes (1 still folded).
Pastry shop E.J. Carlier shipped products worldwide (sometimes for occasion such as Sinterklaas), often accompanied by a printed card on which the customers could state the time of arrival of the package, the condition of the parcel and its contents at the moment of arrival and personal remarks regarding the quality of the products. This archive documents that practice providing insight into the feedback Carlier received - some enthusiastic, some critical. Many cards were returned from Indonesia, notably during the so-called 'Politionele Acties ', by Dutch military personnel. Examples include: "Verpakking zeer goed. Eveneens de kwaliteit uwer gebak" (stamped "Veldpost Soerabaja 5.1.48" and "In actieve dienst. Militair" in pen), "Het pakje zelf verkeerde in goeden staat, de inhoud was echter totaal verkruimeld, wat niet wegnam dat de smaak uitstekend was", "Extremely well packed and contents of very high quality" (stamped "Chingford, 31 Dec. 1947"), "Geen borstplaatjes meer zenden naar de tropen. Deze kwamen in één uitgeloopen massa aan, hoewel de smaak nog uitstekend was", "Noord of Zuid, Carlier blinkt uit!! (from South Africa) and shorter remarks such as "lekker!", "excellent", "zonder sigaretten", "suikerwerken gesmolten, koekjes vers" and "super!". (total ca. 320)
