[Textile] Dutch needlework sampler 1797
48.5 x 51.5 cm, dated 1797 at the top. Dec. w. mills, flowers, figures, buildings and crowns within floral border, framed. With some holes, stains and vague folds, faded.
Samplers served as needlework education for young girls, who were required to learn various patterns and techniques that were deemed necessary for domestic sewing and embroidery. The samples provide, in varying degrees, insight into personal or regional identity and 18-century textile craftsmanship.
