Smet, Gustave de (1877-1943). Picture postcard written by his son Firmin de Smet
Stamped and addressed picture postcard, to "Gustave de Smet Kunstschilder, Torenlaan Laren (N-H), dated "Amsterdam, Zaterdag 19 Jan. 1918".
Interesting personal document by Gustave de Smet's only child, Firmin, who died at the age of 20 on 13 September 1918 as one of the 41 victims of the infamous train disaster near Weesp. During World War I, Gustave de Smet lived in the Netherlands from 1914 to 1922, though apparently at times apart from his wife and son. "Beste Pa, zoo juist uw brieven goed ontvangen. U hebt toch wel mijn kaart en brief gekregen? Uw kleur is er zeker al wel hè? Ze hebben mij beloofd er direct voor te zorgen. (..) Vele groeten van Mama en Firmin."
