[Batavian revolution and patriots] Two items: (1) Miniature portrait medallion of Hendrik Danielsz. Hooft (1716-1794)
Cast gypsum in relief, ca. 4 x 3 cm. (oval), ca. 1787. In orig. frame w. annotation in ballpoint verso. Hendrik Danielsz. Hooft was an Amsterdam regent who became mayor of the city in 1769, and served seven more terms between 1774 and 1787. He joined the Patriot (Patriotten) faction who opposed the rule of the stadtholder, William V, Prince of Orange, whose supporters were known as Orangists (Orangisten). After 1787 his portrait was reproduced in various materials and the Patriots celebrated his birthday up to his death. -and a silver Orangist badge showing the bust of Stadhouder Willem V, ca. 1787, height 3 cm.
