The Passegeule-line was a defensive canal along the border of the Netherlands and Flanders constructed to defend the country from Spanish or French invasions. The engineering project aimed to deepen the canal through tidal inflow from the sea during periods of militar threat, but the the project ultimately failed as the same inflow quickened the silting of the canal.
