Verheiden, J. Praestantium aliquot theologorum,
qui Rom. Antichristum praecipuè oppugnarunt effigies, quibus addita elogia, librorumq, catalogi. The Hague, B.C. Nieuland, 1602. (12),226 p. W. engr. title, 49 half-p. portraits in the text and a half-p. ill. above the engr. poem at the end, all by H. Hondius. 18th cent. catspaw calf, gilt and ribbed spine w. mor. letterpiece, 4to.
Many digitized versions show that two versions of this first edition exist: copies composed exactly like ours (verso of the first portrait, Ioannes Wiclefus blank) and others w. two extra lvs at the beginning (w. portrait and text of the controversial Berengarius). Considering the separate quire signature of these 2 extra lvs, the publisher probably anticipated controversy over this first figure of the series of 50. It is uncertain which version came first, or whether both were issued simultaneously. Occasionally browned or stained. Covers chafed, extremities and spine-ends slightly worn. A good copy, w. manuscript 4-p. index at the end. Simoni V157; Hollstein IX, 159; Van Someren I, 169B. The rare first edition with text; the series of portraits was first published in 1599. On reformers and early biblical scholars such as Erasmus, Calvin, Bucer, Bugenhagen, Zwingli and Hus.
