Part of Commelin (ed.), Begin ende Voortgang, Van de Vereenighde Nederlantsche Geoctroyeerde Oost-Indische Compagnie (1645). This part is on the Dutch raids on the coasts of Peru, the first edition was published in 1626. Jacques l'Hermite (ca. 1582-1624), sometimes also known as Jacques le Clerq, was a Dutch merchant, explorer and admiral known for his journey around the globe with the Nassau Fleet (1623–1626). He served the Dutch East India Company as chief merchant in Bantam and Ambon Island in the Dutch East Indies. The Chilean Hermite Islands near Cape Horn, charted by his fleet in February 1624, are named after him. The voyage aimed to discover an alternative route to the Magellan via the Pacific, by which the Dutch could consolidate their presence in the East Indies.
