[Tachtigers. Signed] Groeningen, Aug. P. van. Martha de Bruin
Amst., Rössing, 1890. First edition. Dedication in pencil by the author on verso first fly-leaf: 'A mon ami H.M. Dekking/August v. Groeningen'. Ownership stamp of 'Henri M. Dekking' on title page. Half cloth.
The only novel published during the author's lifetime. A powerful naturalist story set in Rotterdam, portraying Martha's struggle against the harshness of everyday life. Van Groeningen (1866-1894) died young; his friend Henri M. Dekking is remembered for his esoteric novel Winterkoninkje (1906). A unique copy of an exceptionally rare Dutch literary debut.
Lower outer hinge of spine loose. In fair to good condition.
