[Tachtigers] Isaac Israëls. Erens, Frans. Dansen en Rhytmen (paper edition)

Amsterdam, Versluys, [1893]. First edition. Decorated paper wrappers, design by Isaac Israëls. Variant of the cloth edition. Modernist urban prose poems, written mainly during Erens and Israëls’ nocturnal visits to the Zeedijk and its surroundings around 1890. A fragile production and one of the highpoints of 1890s Dutch book design. In fair to good condition; slightly worn and partly loosening.

Added: Emile Erens. Korte verhalen. Amsterdam, Van Looy, 1906. First and only edition. Paper wrappers. With ex libris by Herman Moerkerk. Prose poems and sketches by Frans Erens’ brother, comprising texts set in Limburg as well as mystical and symbolist-inspired writings (among them Annunciatie, Een extase, and Fantasie). Also includes Morphine, a prose poem on a drug-induced experience — a rare subject in Dutch literature around 1900.
