[Reformation and counter-reformation] Hoffmeister, J. Actorum colloquii Ratisponensis ultimi,
quomodo inchoatum ac desertum, quaeq[ue] in eodem extemporali oratione inter partes disputata fuerint, verissima narratio. Iussu Caes. Maiestatis conscripta & edita. Ingolstadt, Alexander Weissenhorn, 1546, 45 (= 47, leaf numbers 32 and 35 both used twice), modern overlapping vellum, 4to. Some marg. foxing, a very good copy).
Rare first edition of this important work on the second ''Regensburger Religionsgespräch' (English: 'Ratisbon Colloquy') of 1546, a theological conference held in the city in January-March 1546, in an effort to restore unity in the Holy Roman Empire between Protestants and Catholics. The colloquy came to an abrupt end following Luther's death on 17 February 1546, after which Emperor Charles V resolved to begin the Schmalkaldic War against the Lutherans. The present volume contains the Catholic view of the failed negotiations. See the lot of two satirical tokens concerning this subject and period (the Council of Trent) elsewhere in this auction.
