Clandestine printing Zehn kleine Meckerlein
N.pl., n.publ., n.d. (Amst., A.A. Balkema, 1943). Printed in 40 copies, (18) p., loose in orig. pink wr., 15.2 x 13 cm. Leaf 4/3 with waterst. from wrs. in r. margin, the following 2 lvs are also affected. Frontwr. dam., wr. splitting on spine. Satirical dipping rhyme ("Flüsterwitz") consisting of nine quatrains by an unknown author, based on 'Ten little Niggers'. The text is, perhaps mistakenly, said to originate from concentration camp prisoners (the name of Oranienburg is mentioned in the final stanza). Cover and leaves are roughly stamped by hand with woodblock numerals in red and green and with 5 primitive woodblock illustrations, possibly by Dick Elffers ('Dem Elften kleine Meckerlein' on the back cover may allude to him). Very rare. Ref.: Catalogus van A.A. Balkema p. 10, 2. De Jong, 973; Purvis, Dutch Graphic Design 1918-1949, p. 182 and 184; Purvis, Werkman, p. 25.
