Carolee Schneemann. ABC - We Print Anything - In The Cards, 1977/ re-issue 1990
Re-issue of the work from 1977 with the original cards, but housed in a newly designed box (not the original blue cloth box), 8.5 x 13.5 x 9.5 cm. ABC- We Print Anything - In The Cards'' was a performance staged at Franklin Furnace New York and De Appel Amsterdam in 1977, which documented the turbulent relationship between the artist and two lovers. Schneemann recited texts from index cards while images were projected on a screen behind her. The performance piece was also conceived as a boxed set of cards, published by the Brummense Uitgeverij Van Luxe Werkjes, Beuningen (NL).
This lot contains 156 numbered index cards printed with text, each accompanied by a corresponding image card bearing the same number. Printed in various colours of ink on cards in differing tones. As usual with this series, there are minor inconsistencies in the compilation of cards. This copy lacks three text cards (28, 102, 120), but includes all six introduction cards (2 affixed to the box). The original edition was issued in 151 signed and numbered copies. This copy is unsigned and unnumbered, originating directly from the publisher Geurt van Dijk, who commissioned Sacha de Ven to design the new box in 1990. The handmade cardboard box retains the original title card and end card mounted to the top and bottom, with the designer's name and production date printed inside the lid.
