[Homosexuality] Chigo no Soshi (Book of Acolytes). Two homo-erotic scenes
Two 19th-century copies of scenes from this earliest known medieval Japanese painting on male-male sexual relationships in Buddhist temples. (original version 1321). Watercol. on paper. (1) Scene one 'A mature male servant prepares an acolyte for a night of sex with a priest, warming his bottom over a small brazier and dresses him up in a fine robe, directing him to the door of the priest's bedchamber'. 71 x 30.5 cm. (2) Scene two: 'An acolyte is pursued by an older priest and decides to play a trick on him. He gets the priest to hide in a clump of grasses and then has a fellow acolyte hitch up his robes and back onto the priest's penis, which is sticking out from the grasses'. 84 x 30.5 cm.
