[Crimean War] The seat of war in the east. 1855

William Simpson, Paul & Dominic Colnaghi, London, 1855.

Elephant folio, half-red leather and red-morocco, gilt-stamped title on spine, incl. the 40 coloured lithographies incl. litho frontispiece. A number of prints, mainly those about combat, come with explanatory litho text. Stains mostly outside of print image. The beautifully executed prints, drawn by Simpson and lithographied by Needham, provide a complete image of this war. The Crimean War (Oct. 1853 - Feb. 1856) was a conflict fought between Imperial Russia and an alliance of the 2nd French Empire, the British Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the Kingdom of Sardinia. The war was a part of the long-lived conflict between the European superpowers to try and influence the collapsing Ottoman Empire. The conflict mostly took place in the Crimea.
