Original engraved copper plate with portrait of Daniel Defoe

The portrait itself measures 11 x 8.5 cm, the plate 19 x 12 cm, engraved after Michael van der Gucht, verso w. stamped address "B. Whittow & [Son] No. 45 Shoe Lane Holborn London" (Benjamin Whittow, copperplate maker, 1750-1805) together with mounted remnants of an old letterpress label reading "...iginal copperpla... oe's Robinson..." The original copper plate for a frontispiece portrait in an edition unidentified by us.
