[Signed dedication] Multatuli. [Rare association copy] Duizend-en-eenige Hoofdstukken over Specialiteiten

Delft, Waltman, 1879. 2nd ed. Author's dedication in ink on the first fly-leaf: 'Den here/ mr. J. de Witt Hamer/ van/zijn vriend/ de schr.[ijver]/ Bergen O.[p] Z.[oom]/ 13 maart 1879.' Michiel Jacobus de Witt Hamer (1843-1925) was a lawyer, politician and radical social reformer, and a close friend of Multutali from 1878 onwards. On 12 March 1879, Multatuli and De Witt had narrowly missed each other; in a letter of that date to De Witt (Volledige Werken vol. 19, p. 759.), Multatuli writes: WEDGestr Heer! Ik was even uit geweest, en verneem thuiskomende dat UED de goedheid hadt, te laten vragen wanneer ik UED ontvangen kon.(....)". They met the following day, on March 13.

Fine copy. Minor dam. to upper and lower spine. Volledige Werken (vol. 19, p. 759) mentions a copy of Millioenen-studiën w. dedication to De Witt from a private collection; this Duizend-en-eenige Hoofdstukken copy is unrecorded. Dedication copies by Multatuli are extremely RARE.
