Both are winter scenes on the rivers Vecht and IJssel (mistakenly identified in captions as Lek) frozen over. The view of Utrecht depicts people ice skating and a woman falling over. The view of Deventer depicts an entire horse carriage crossing the frozen river. Both ca. 9,5 x 17,5 cm (image) and ca. 11 x 17,5 cm (leaf).
Numb. in verso, resp. No. 39 and No. 47. Remains of blue paper on verso, else in good condition. The drawings are in the context of the French invasion under general Jean-Charles Pichegru in the winter of 1795, in order to assist the Dutch Batavian revolutionary troops. The captions remark that large groups of people are fleeing into these cities, in order to escape the French troops.
