With 1 (of 2) full-p. woodcuts, depicting St. Kilian and coat-of-arms, large decorated initial "T" in ink and gouache, large "A" initial painted in red and blue, and num. (dec.) woodcut initials printed in red. Later (16th-cent.) richly blindtooled pigskin w. black-stamped vignette on front cover depicting Jesus on the Cross, imprinted in ink above "CMS" (=Conventus Münster-Schwarsach), written below in manuscript "Dominus meus / & Deus meus", spine w. four double raised bands w. vellum letterpiece in top compartment, titled in red ink, dec. bronze corners and clasps, blue-speckled edges, w. bronze bookmarks. In modern clamshell box. The calendar in the beginning has been extensively annotated, w. saints' days both crossed out and added, as well as w. instructions concerning the celebration.
Provenance: Missal used at the Abbey of Münster-Schwarzach, where annotated and restored w. manuscript leaves. Later 19th or 20th cent. owner's signature on pastedown and a different signature on first free endpaper. Some bibliographical notes on pastedown. Front cover nearly detached, sl. rubbed, lower hinge weak; first leaves sl. finger-soiled, a few leaves w. sm. tear in margin. Overall a very good copy with wide margins and a fascinating provenance.
