Matham, J. (1571-1631). The adoration of the Magi
Engraving, 42 x 24.2 cm (with semi-circular top), after Jacopo Palma (1480-1528), signed "I. Maetham [sic] schulp", "J. Palmo inve." and w. 4-line Latin verse in the plate, mounted at top corners under passe-partout. A very fine contemp. impression, w. good margins. A few closed tears, minuscule holes, remnants of former mount at verso of r. margin, a bit creased. Despite these defects a very impressive print. Hollstein 41, first state (of 2). (2) Th. de Leu (1555-1611/12). "Tentationes eius ac victoria in daemonem" (St. Francis attacked by a demon). Engraving, 13.5 x 18.5 cm, signed "Thomas de Leu. ex.", titled, numb. 11 and w. key explaining lettered parts of the scene, mounted at upper corners under passe-partout. Good impression on thin laid paper w. a rather narrow construction, good margins (uneven lower margin). Very rare print. -and 3 others, incl. 1 other by Matham and 2 engravings by Willem van Swanenburg (!) (1580-1612) (one w. very large closed tear).
