Pieter (Piet) van der Hem (1902-1961)
"Lord Chamberlain vervaarlijk omringd door schepen" 45 x 30 cm. Mixed technique. Caricature probably referring to the British naval treaty with Nazi Germany. Verso a caricature rejected by Van der Hem of a Nazi leader picking a daisy.
* In 1935 England ratified a naval treaty with Germany which allowed Nazi Germany to build up to 35 percent of the British naval strength. By this policy of appeasement Germany was able to build a fleet without reaching the limit mentioned in the treaty.
