Vriesland, Victor E. van (1892-1974). Two autograph signed letters in pen and ink,
both A4 size, one side only, both w. the printed name Victor E. van Vriesland in upper left corner, dated Amsterdam, 6 respectively 17 February and w. Van Vriesland's address Oranje Nassaulaan 85III in pen in upper r. corner, folded. The first letter is address to "Weled. z.g. Heer" (Philipsen), the other to Zeer geachte heer Philipsen (= J.P.W. Philipsen, (1908-1988)). In the first letter Van Vriesland asks for permission to borrow the thesis that Philipsen wrote on the talented Dutch poet Anthonij van der Woordt (1769-1794), who died at the age of just 25. Van Vriesland asks for it, because he is writing the introduction of a new publication of the poems of Van der Woordt, that was eventually published by De Spiegel in Amst., 1941. In the second letter Van Vriesland thanks Philipsen for not only granting permission, but also for receiving an extensive summary, on which Van Vriesland writes a short commentary in the letter.
*See Inleiding tot Antonij van der Woordt, p. 435-462, in: Onderzoek en Vertoog 2 (1958), in which Van Vriesland extensively discusses the thesis of Philipsen. The poems that Philipsen wrote himself were published under the title Woorden uit de verte. Nagelaten gedichten van Jan P.W. Philipsen, Leiden, 1988. Provenance is the same as that of the works of Kate Philipsen (see elsewhere in this auction). (total 2)
