Ulay & Jurgen Klauke. Performance masks 'Keine Möglichkeit 2 Platzwunden'
Used during the performance staged in De Appel Amsterdam, on 11, 12 and 14 September 1975. Two transparent plastic masks with attached string, each approx. 23 x 16 x 11 cm. One features a cast of Ulay's face, the other features Klauke's face. The masks were gifted to the current owner, a signed note (incl. in the lot) stated they could be collected at De Appel. With two (hardly visible) tears to Ulay's mask, else very crisp performance relics.
The transparent masks were handed out to the (small) audience to wear during the performance. In the first act the artists wore each other's face-mask, additional film projections of their faces on the masks accentuated the intertwining of their identities. In the second act the artists wore multiple layered white masks and played Russian roulette with a 9 mm revolver, exchanging the revolver five times. 'On the sixth time, Klauke shoots at Ulay (with a blank). Ulay takes off his top white mask. A bloodstained transparent mask is revealed. Klauke falls down'. Ref. Marga van Mechelen, De Appel, 2006 p.63.
